New York – September 4, 2023: The International Organization for Transitional Justice and Peace is delighted to announce its role as a founding member of the Prosecutors for Prosecutors campaign, dedicated to supporting and rescuing Afghan prosecutors and those in the justice system facing serious threats. This vital initiative aims to protect the lives of approximately 1,500 prosecutors in Afghanistan and neighboring countries who confront imminent dangers, including extrajudicial killings, torture, field court proceedings, and human rights violations.
The campaign comes in the wake of horrifying reports of prosecutors being targeted, tortured, and murdered by the Taliban and released criminals. Its primary mission is to rescue the remaining prosecutors who are estimated to number around 1,500.
To fund this life-saving initiative, $15 million has been raised, focusing on facilitating the relocation of prosecutors by any means necessary. Each prosecutor will receive financial support totaling $10,000 to cover associated expenses, relocation costs, and other necessary expenditures.
Although the practical phases of relocation have yet to commence, the campaign remains unwavering in its pursuit of its objectives. The International Organization for Transitional Justice and Peace, in partnership with its allies, stands united in its commitment to protect and support those at the forefront of justice in Afghanistan.
